“As President Trump withdraws the United States from the World Health Organization, California is stepping up under Governor Gavin Newsom — becoming the first, and currently the only, state to join the WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network (GOARN), strengthening public health preparedness and rapid response coordination,” stated Newsom’s office.
During his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos this past week, Governor Newsom met with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, demonstrating the kind of responsible, sane leadership that is so sorely lacking inside the White House right now. With each new bold maneuver, Newsom supercharges his presidential prospects.
Trump’s decision to withdraw America from the WHO after 80 years of membership — which became official yesterday — is emblematic of his stupid, self-defeating worldview. The move accomplished nothing beyond endangering the health of the public and was carried out solely to appeal to the paranoid conspiracy theorists who make up his MAGA base. They view all international organizations with suspicion and would prefer to retreat into a provincial, isolated, superstitious existence.
“The Trump administration’s withdrawal from WHO is a reckless decision that will hurt all Californians and Americans,” Newsom stated. “California will not bear witness to the chaos this decision will bring.
