DC Studios’ upcoming Man of Tomorrow has reached a significant milestone in production, with executive producer Lars Winther confirming that filming is already halfway complete.
The update came during the world premiere of Supergirl in New York City, where Winther offered fans an early glimpse at what to expect from the next chapter of James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe.
Filming Passes the Halfway Mark
Principal photography on Man of Tomorrow officially began on April 20, 2026, at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Winther, production is progressing smoothly and has now reached its midpoint.
The sequel follows the events of Superman (2025) and continues DC Studios’ interconnected storytelling under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Scheduled for release in July 2027, the film is expected to become one of the biggest entries in the new DC Universe.
Supergirl Will Have a Much Larger Presence
Winther revealed that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will play a major role in the upcoming film, sharing extensive screen time with David Corenswet’s Superman.
“Supergirl’s in it a lot,” Winther said during the premiere.
He explained that audiences will see the relationship between the two Kryptonian cousins develop in meaningful ways, making their dynamic one of the sequel’s central storylines.
“You see their dynamic, which I think is cool.”
According to Winther, Supergirl serves as an important bridge into Man of Tomorrow, giving audiences valuable insight into Kara Zor-El’s past before she reunites with Superman.
The standalone film will help establish her motivations, personality, and evolving connection with her famous cousin before the pair face a much greater threat together.
Brainiac Raises the Stakes
Winther also teased the arrival of Brainiac, who will be portrayed by Lars Eidinger.
Without revealing specific plot details, he described the iconic Superman villain as unlike anything the heroes have encountered so far in the DC Universe.
“A whole new level of villain.”
The producer suggested that Superman and Supergirl will have to stand together against Brainiac, signaling a much larger and more dangerous conflict than previous DCU installments.
James Gunn Returns Behind the Camera
James Gunn is once again writing and directing the sequel after launching the rebooted cinematic universe with Superman.
Returning cast members include:
- David Corenswet as Superman / Clark Kent
- Milly Alcock as Supergirl / Kara Zor-El
- Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
- Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
- Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner
- Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
- Aaron Pierre as John Stewart
Production is expected to continue through mid-2026, with filming taking place across Georgia, Ohio, and the United Kingdom.
Building Toward DC’s Biggest Story Yet
Winther described Man of Tomorrow as an ambitious step forward for the growing DC Universe.
“The Man of Tomorrow is going to be epic.”
With Supergirl laying the emotional groundwork for Kara Zor-El’s story and Man of Tomorrow bringing together more of DC Studios’ expanding roster of heroes, the sequel is shaping up to become one of the franchise’s most important chapters as James Gunn continues building a connected cinematic universe.
