Scott Caan is remembering his dad James Caan.
His son Scott, now 46 years old, remembered some of his father’s most helpful counsel to him in a recent interview with Extra, which was conducted in conjunction with the promotion of his new Fox series Alert: Missing Persons Unit. The Godfather actor passed away in the month of July at the age of 82.
“We’ve been friends from the beginning… There was nothing that needed to be said that wasn’t spoken, and I’m not going to delve into the details because I don’t want to, “Scott recounted the events of his last several discussions with James.
“”I’m fortunate for that,” Scott said, “and as you said, he’s one of the finest human beings of all time, forget actors, which he was also one of the best at doing… he’s one of the greatest people who ever lived.” If you knew him, you were well aware that you would never encounter another person quite like him again in your life. Special guy, man.”
When the actor was asked what the finest piece of advice James had ever given Scott, he resorted to using sports analogies: “Do you get what I mean when I say, “Keep your head down when you’re fielding a ground ball?” It was always about athletics while he was around.”
“When I was around three or four years old, he instructed me that if someone did anything to me that I didn’t like, I was to tell them once not to do it, and if they did it again, I was to beat them. He began this instruction when I was little. That was the counsel he gave, “he said.
In 2010, the actor of Hawaii Five-0 and his father discussed their relationship in an interview with PEOPLE. According to Scott, whose father he has referred to as “the greatest actor of all time,” Scott’s father has been a significant source of inspiration for him throughout his career.
In spite of the affection he had for us, though, Scott was quite direct: “It would be a lie to pretend that our relationship wasn’t problematic.” Scott was brought up by his mother, the model Sheila Ryan, after the divorce of his parents when he was a young child. James said that Scott “witnessed a lot of things I wish I didn’t do.” “He saw me when I was a bit rough around the edges,” including moments when James was fighting heroin addiction. “He saw me when I was a little rough around the edges.”
James said at that moment, “Now,” that they were indeed the best of friends.
Scott expressed his agreement, adding “I have no animosity. Despite the fact that he has made errors that have damaged both him and me, he has never stopped being there for me no matter what.” James continued by saying, “I am pleased with how well he has matured.”
On July 7, a message announcing James’ loss was published on social media from the actor’s official account. A loss certificate revealed that James passed away as a result of a heart attack and coronary artery disease. The actor also struggled with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure in addition to his other health conditions.
Caan’s movie and television career spanned over 60 years, with some of his most noteworthy appearances being in films such as The Godfather (1972), Misery (1990), and Elf. Caan was a giant in the film business (2003).
Caan has been honored with various awards, including nominations for both the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards, as well as four nominations for the Golden Globes. In 1978, he was also presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his achievements.
