At the 2024 Oscars, several celebrities including Billie Eilish, Finneas, Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, Ramy Youssef, Quannah Chasinghorse, and Mahershala Ali were spotted wearing round red pins with a black heart and hand shape.
These pins symbolized support for ending Israel’s war on Gaza, which began on October 7, leading to over 30,000 deaths, many of whom were children due to Gaza’s young population.
The call for a ceasefire, amplified by Artists4Ceasefire, gained support from over 400 celebrities urging President Biden and the US Congress for an immediate end to the conflict.
Unlike previous movements like Time’s Up, only a few wore the peace pins at the Oscars. During the Grammy Awards, Boygenius and Annie Lennox also wore these pins, with Lennox advocating for peace onstage. Additionally, Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud displayed Palestinian flag pins at the Oscars.
The movement seeks to hasten a ceasefire and end the war, with celebrities like Cate Blanchett, Ben Affleck, and Jennifer Lopez signing the Artists4Ceasefire letter, highlighting the industry’s participation in the call for peace.
