A four-year-old boy was the unlikely hero during a worrying medical emergency involving his mother. He did something that stunned paramedics, and one even revealed no child that age had ever achieved something like that in her 15 years of service.
A youngster from Launceston, Tasmania, did something unthinkable when his mom needed urgent help. The incident caught the woman off guard, and she tried to reach her husband when she felt unwell, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Thankfully, brave little Monty was home with his mother and surprisingly had the required skills to assist her when she needed him most.
Teaching Her Son Life-Saving Skills
Wendy Cocker, a registered nurse, decided to teach her son valuable skills after they visited an ambulance station during one of his school outings. She recalled: “Having seizures, I need to let him know how to do it.”
She knew it was crucial to equip him with basic safety skills, but she never imagined how quickly they would have to put what he had learned into practice.
Paramedic [Danielle] Masters was inspired by Wendy and Monty, taking their unexpected ordeal as a lesson for herself and her kids. She also had a four-year-old and immediately taught him a few crucial skills.
Her Son’s Quick and Calm Response
In September 2020, one day after Wendy taught her son to dial 000 from both a locked and unlocked phone, she had a seizure that left her desperate for medical attention.
While she was losing consciousness in her Launceston home, her son did something heroic. Wendy shared:
“After that, within a couple of minutes, Monty made a triple-0 call and that’s pretty much all I remember. And then I came to and it was all happening, the ambulance was there.”
Speaking to the Operator
While Wendy was unresponsive, Monty remained calm and spoke with the operator on the phone. During the communication, the four-year-old said: “[Mommy] fell over,” before answering the rest of the operator’s questions.
The little boy also informed the emergency team about his family’s dog, which liked to bark at people. He assured the operator that his pet was friendly before the paramedics were heard entering the home.
The Little Hero
Paramedics were able to assist Wendy and when she regained consciousness, she was beaming with pride because of her son’s actions. She expressed: “He’s my little hero. He certainly has saved the day.”
When Monty’s grandmother asked to see her “superhero” grandson after the incident, he swiftly replied, “Oh, I’m not a superhero; I’m just a hero.” The paramedic team also awarded the little boy a certificate of appreciation for his deeds.
A First in 15 Years
Danielle Masters, an intensive care paramedic, was in awe of how well Monty handled the ordeal. She added that during her 15 years of service, she had never encountered a four-year-old that made a call for an ambulance.
Monty was undoubtedly a special little hero, and he deserved all the praise that came his way. Masters noted that he handled the stressful situation exceptionally well. She said:
“I was actually amazed [by] how he knew he needed to call an ambulance, and then actually [knowing] how to call an ambulance.”
A Helpful Lesson for Everyone
Wendy encouraged others to take her experience as a sign that it was never too early to teach kids new skills. She explained that telling them what to do if they were worried was essential because “it could save a life.”

“Probably the most important thing is how to use the phone [and] to get into the screen to press the numbers.”
