LeBron James names his greatest inspiration: “There was nobody more inspiring than Michael Jordan”

Even at 40, The King is still giving credit where it’s due.

Heading into his record-setting 23rd NBA season, LeBron James is once again the center of trade rumors and legacy debates. But in the middle of all that noise, LeBron made it clear who first inspired him to chase greatness: Michael Jordan.

LeBron Shouts Out MJ on Mind the Game Podcast

In a preview for the next episode of his podcast Mind the Game, co-hosted with JJ Redick, LeBron didn’t dodge the GOAT question. Instead, he leaned into it:

“There was nobody more inspiring to me than Michael Jordan.”

“For me, I think our games would’ve complemented each other well. MJ was a flat-out scorer. He had a scorer’s mentality. Scorer, scorer, scorer.”

The crowd immediately reacted, and so did social media.

Fans React: MJ vs. LeBron Debate Rekindled

Once LeBron’s comments hit X (formerly Twitter), fans jumped right back into the GOAT debate:

  • “Bron keep showing love to MJ. Haters will find something wrong with this too lol,” one fan wrote.
  • “Can’t wait for Jordan fans to take this completely out of context,” posted another.
  • “This is why MJ is the GOAT,” said a third.
  • “LeGOAT is my inspiration,” another added.

As always, Jordan loyalists pointed to his 6–0 Finals record and 10 scoring titles in 15 seasons.
Meanwhile, LeBron supporters fired back with 10 Finals appearances and his status as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

LeBron Still In Control of His Story

At 40, LeBron’s future with the Lakers is still being sorted out. His agent, Rich Paul, recently confirmed that four teams are interested in LeBron:

  • Dallas Mavericks
  • Golden State Warriors
  • Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Los Angeles Clippers

But according to Paul, LeBron has not requested a trade.

For now, The King is keeping his focus on the present, making podcasts, mentoring Bronny, and preparing for another season, all while tipping his hat to the player who made him fall in love with the game.

GOAT Respect, No Matter the Side

Whether you rep Team LeBron or Team MJ, one thing is clear:
LeBron isn’t afraid to show respect to his idols, even while chasing his own legacy.

And if fans can’t agree on who the GOAT is, maybe that’s the point. Both names deserve their place at the top.
