The majority of people first became familiar with actor Ted Danson via the long-running comedy “Cheers,” which he starred in and for which he won two Emmy Awards. In addition, he picked up a handful of Golden Globes and established himself as a recognizable figure on American television.
His appearances on “The Good Place,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” are perhaps the ones that have made him the most recognizable to younger generations. Nonetheless, Danson’s film and television credits span decades and all types of different ventures.
Nonetheless, Danson began his career directly out of college in an Off-Broadway musical called “The Real Inspector Hound.” After some time, he uprooted his life and relocated to Los Angeles, where he enrolled in acting studies at the Actor’s Institute.
His other notable parts include “Something about Amelia,” “The Women’s Room,” and “When the Bough Breaks,” which was also his first appearance on television. You may also recognize him from the films “Dad,” “Made in America,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Three Guys and a Little Woman,” and many more.
His roles in “Cross Creek” and subsequently “Pontiac Moon” distinguished him differently, as they set the scene for the remainder of his life, as he met the person who would not just become his life partner. She became his coworker and the love of his life.
Partnerships and Encounters He Had Before Before she found her soul mate, Mary Steenburgen Danson dated a number of other ladies. His first marriage, which took place in 1970, was to Randall Gosh. They wed just before each of their separate college graduations after having met in school. But, as their respective careers progressed, they eventually parted ways in 1975.
In 1977, the actor weds his second wife, Cassandra Coates; the couple’s first child, Kate, was born in 1979 after they had been married for three years. When some time had passed, they decided to adopt a second daughter and gave birth to Alexis. Coates was only ever able to give birth once, but difficulties during that delivery left her paraplegic.
Because of this, their relationship became more difficult. After meeting on the set of “Made in America” in 1992, the renowned actor Ted Danson famously dated the actress Whoopi Goldberg while he was still married to Coates. After the revelation of their affair by the public, Coates sued for divorce, which was eventually granted in 1993.
Sadly for Ted Danson, the divorce was difficult and costly, and in 1993, his dalliance with Goldberg came to a stop as well. The actor was finally able to get back in touch with the person who meant the most to him.
At the tryouts for “Cross Creek” in 1983, he got the opportunity to meet Mary Steenburgen, but at the time, he was married to Coates. Danson has said that looking back on it now, it was a difficult period in his life. In addition to this, Steenburgen was also involved in a romantic connection. That just was not the appropriate moment.
They both agree that it was for the best that Danson did not get the part of Steenburgen’s spouse in the production, and they are both thankful that Danson was not cast in the role. On the other hand, in 1993, they met again while filming “Pontiac Moon,” even though neither of them was interested in a romantic partnership at the time.
After a short marriage to Malcolm McDowell, with whom she shared custody of their children Charles and Lily Amanda, Steenburgen had just finalized their divorce. Both Danson and the actress believed that they were not “relationship material” at the time, and neither was prepared for anything more than a platonic connection.
Yet, the universe had other ideas for them, and things began to change for them when Danson and his buddies planned a journey that was unlike any other. They were unable to continue to suppress their emotions as it became clear that a romantic atmosphere had been created between them.
Their Partnership Evolved Into One That Is Romantic
Mary Steenburgen was one of the people whom Dan Steenburgen and his pals invited on a canoe excursion to Mendocino, California. They went on a picnic, and afterwards, the actor stated that it was “wonderful,” and that he and the actress fell back in love.
In the meanwhile, the actress said that they had already been living since they were in their 40s and 45s. The fact that they reunited at such a trying period proved to be fortuitous in the long run, despite the fact that both of them were still “facing some demons” when they first met.
From that point, they maintained a stable relationship, and on February 8, 1995, Danson proposed to his girlfriend. Since he was certain that Steenburgen was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, he decided to propose to her on her birthday when she was filming “Powder” in Houston.
They tied the knot in Martha’s Vineyard, in the state of Massachusetts, on October 7th, 1995. On their guest list were former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton, both of whom knew Steenburgen well and were close friends.
Alexis served as a flower girl, while bridesmaids Kate, who belonged to the actor, and Lily, who belonged to Steenburgen, were in attendance during the wedding. The actress’ son was in charge of carrying the wedding rings down the aisle.
Their Joyous Marriage in the Present Day
After their marriage, both Danson and Steenburgen went on to appear in another film together, which was titled “Gulliver’s Travels.” They proceeded with their occupations while adjusting to their new life as a married couple. You may recognize them from their role in the film “It Gotta Be Love,” which was released in 2004, in which they portrayed a couple who considered breaking up but ultimately decided to remain together.
When Steenburgen’s star was finally placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009, her whole family got together to celebrate the occasion. They welcomed their four children from their previous marriages into their family. In 2013, the actress gave an interview in which she discussed her relationship with the actor, as well as the fact that she had quit dating completely.
The actress said that after her divorce she had become jaded about love and she believed that their connection would never go beyond the stage of a simple infatuation. In her words:
“There is no question that he is a gift from above.”
Regrettably, in 2017, there were reports that the couple was getting divorced, but it turned out that the reason for the accusations was due of their characters on the show “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” They portrayed a heightened version of themselves in the piece, which featured a couple that was on the verge of breaking up.
Others took Danson’s “announcement” of the breakup when he was a guest on “The Jess Cagle Show” a little more seriously than they should have. The tale became popular on the internet, but most people didn’t understand it until the episode was shown. Despite this, Danson and Steenburgen were had to address their anxious friends and family members and explain the situation.
Thankfully, the rumors died down, and the couple was able to go on with their joyful life together. In 2018, Danson was honored with a Critic’s Choice award and celebrated the achievement by posting a celebratory photo on her Instagram account. The performance of the actor in “The Good Place” garnered a lot of praise.
Later on in that year, they spoke about how to maintain the excitement in their relationship. The actress confirmed to People that the actor is continuously telling her that she is lovely, which was disclosed by Danson when he said that he complements his wife on a regular basis. She is appreciative despite the fact that she is aware that many other ladies do not get the same level of attention.
In November 2018, when People magazine named Danson the sexiest man alive, Steenburgen used the opportunity to say a little bit more about her spouse. She went on to say that each day their love becomes “more deep,” and that they experience the highs and lows of life together as well. She went on to say that
“He is my partner in this life in the most fundamental meaning of the term,” I said.
The actress made the observation that the qualities of compassion, sensitivity, and strength helped to strengthen their marriage. She referred to him as the realization of her childhood fantasies, and she did not take that fact for granted. In addition to that, Steenburgen adores his dashing good looks.
In 2019, the actor claimed that the couple’s meditation practice, which Steenburgen had introduced him to at the beginning of their relationship, is one of the reasons their love is so much stronger now. Their marriage is a significant component of Danson’s spirituality, which is a trait that he has in plenty.
They enhance their connection by meditating together since, if they did not, they would be too busy to be there for each other if they needed help. In addition to this, the practice has been of great assistance to him in dealing with his arthritis, which used to be quite debilitating.
In the year 2020, the actress commemorated the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary by posting a photo on Instagram. The following was what she wrote as the caption for it:
“Best wishes on your 25th anniversary! This was SUPPOSED to be a cute and loving anniversary shot, but instead, you have a large chunk of salad stuck between your teeth. So there you have it. Thank you for making me laugh yesterday, today, and each and every one of the 9,125 days that have passed since we first met. You are the funniest, smartest, and most generous person in the whole wide universe. Even if it is a significant portion of salad, it is not enough to detract from your unparalleled attractiveness. I just can’t get over how fortunate I am. Ted, I hope you have a wonderful year! Sincerely, Mary”
Also, the actress has divulged the information that Danson is always quite polite to her. They continue to be kind to one another by doing acts of service for one another, such as giving each other coffee. The most important thing, though, is to show that you appreciate their affection on a daily basis.
The pair is quite complimentary of one another, as seen by Danson’s comments about his wife just before to the launch of “Zoey’s Incredible Playlist.” The fact that he is married to Mary Steenburgen, he described as his “biggest role.”
They were featured in the People’s Love Issue in 2021, where they spoke about how to have a happy and healthy relationship. The actress was quoted in the magazine as saying:
“While I have learned a great deal from each person that I have ever loved, I really believe that my life started when I met him. I believe that love is just being attentive to what your heart has to say.”
As everything was going on, Danson was explaining that his number one rule is that everyone must always be honest with one another. He also said that you should be thankful for the fact that you have a life since this is the only way your heart can expand. The actor went on to say:
“Being able to love and be loved is an essential component of the human experience. It is something I consume daily. It is a genuinely beautiful experience when loving and being loved are reciprocated in such a way that the cycle continues.”
Charlie Steenburgen, the son of Mary Steenburgen, wed the actress Lily Collins on September 4, 2021. Collins is most known for her performance in the Netflix series “Emily in Paris.” The happy couple commemorated the event by posting images of their festivities and messages of congratulations on Instagram, where the couple’s extended family had gathered in Dunton, Colorado.
During Kelly Clarkson’s talk program in 2022, Danson said that he feels “helpless” when his wife is not there since he is unable to function without her. He went on to say that they had a rule of two weeks in the past, but that it has been amended throughout the years. They cannot stand to be apart from one another for more than 24 hours at a time.
Their Lovely Family Life and Lovely House Together
In 2018, Danson and Steenburgen purchased a ranch in Santa Monica of 4,000 square feet to use as their primary residence. In addition to it, they own the land just next to it. At the time, they spent $5.15 million for it, and it consists of three bedrooms as well as four baths.
They have lived in a number of different houses throughout the course of their lives, but their ranch in Los Angeles seems to be the one that brings the most attention to them due to their many internet and social media presences. In 2019, they were able to get more than $8 million for the retreat property in Ojai, California, that had previously been owned by Ellen DeGeneres.
Their children and grandkids come to see them very often. In the year 2020, Steenburgen shared a photo of Danson on her Instagram account along with a caption that discussed their house and the “reading nook” that they had constructed. The actress also expressed her regret that the current status of the globe prevents her from spending as much time as she would want with her grandchildren. This is what she wrote:
“After moving into our current home, we made a cozy reading nook that we affectionately refer to as “The Book Nook” for our grandkids. Now that they are older, their other grandparents will read them a couple of books from that collection every other day, but it will be our time to read them a couple of books from that collection every other day. While it is difficult for me to avoid snuggling up with them when I read, I am thankful to have this tender connection with them.”
All four of Danson and Steenburgen’s children are now adults and have either started or are in the process of starting their own families. Kate and Alexis Danson and Charlie and Lilly Steenburgen. The actors had a lot of fun playing the role of doting grandparents to them. Steenburgen’s only kid, Lilly, is a mother, and she has three little girls named Clementine, Goldie, and Vera.
In 2018, The actress thanked him for being a fantastic parent, stepfather, and grandpa. It was her statement that:
“We have been grandparents now for six years. The two grandchildren that we have are unable to resist the urge to climb on him. They really love him. They take him for nothing more than a jungle gym. He is known to them as Teddy, which is the name they have given him, and they love him.
The actor tries all he can to be more “present” with his family, including meditating to avoid the pain of his arthritis, which is an incurable condition. Danson explained:
“When you are more present, when you are more in your body and less in your thoughts, you are open to be genuine with whomever it is that you are with… be there for my grandchildren, be there for my wife, be truthful, be loving, and be there.”
