Six generations of women recently gathered for a heartwarming family photo. At 98 years old, MaeDell Hawkins is the matriarch, known for her love of holding babies. The photo features only women, including Gracie, her mother Francis, daughter Jacqueline, granddaughter Jaisline, and great-great-great-granddaughter Zhavia.
MaeDell, who turns 99 in July, is described as sharp and spirited. Despite her age and current nursing home stay, she eagerly took Zhavia from her mother’s arms for the photo, even tickling her tiny feet.
The photo unexpectedly went viral after Gracie shared it, surprising her. She sees it as a chance for her grandmother to enjoy some well-deserved recognition.
MaeDell’s life wasn’t easy; she married at 16 to a 50-year-old railroad worker, raising 13 children and stepmothering 10 more without modern conveniences. Despite the hardships, she never complained and ensured her family had food and clean clothes.
The family has grown significantly, and they’re approaching 622 members. Despite outliving spouses and most stepchildren, MaeDell has lived a full and cherished life.
