Betty White is an American actress and comedian who is referred to as the ‘First lady of the Television’; a title used for a 2018 documentary detailing her life and carrier.
She was born on January 17th, 1922 at Oak Park, Illinois, U.S. White’s family moved to Los Angeles during the Great Depression. Her first job was at a local television station and in 1952 she launched her first show, “Life with Elizabeth”. But she is best known for her comedic work on numerous television sitcoms, most notably the Mary Tyler Moore show and the Golden girls. ‘The Golden Girls series, centered on a group of older women living together in Miami, became a major success. White earned seven Emmy nominations and won the award in 1986. In 2010 White experienced a major surge in popularity, fueled in part by a humorous super bowl commercial in which she was tackled during a recreational football game. Fans subsequently launched a Facebook campaign to have the 88-year-old actress host Saturday night live. Though she was initially reluctant she told Newsweek, It was the scariest thing she had ever done. She further said that it was enjoyable but was a challenge”. Even though she has achieved such heights in her life, according to her, none of that matters. For White, what matters the most is her charity work to animals. “I have to keep acting so that I can afford to keep doing my charity work!”, she said to a Hollywood reporter.
From a very young age, Betty had a close relationship with animals. “When I was a small girl, my parents and I would pack up for three weeks and camo in the High Sierras. We don’t see a single human being but lovely animals, the whole time” she says. Her parents were also very close to animals. Once Betty jokingly said, “I think my parents would’ve been happier to have a little animal than having me”. This depicts the love, her parents had towards animals. Now we know how she became an ‘animal lover’.
Betty worked with the Los Angeles zoo and the morris animal foundation, for more than 40 long years. She refers to herself as the luckiest old woman on the planet because she got the chance to work in the profession she loves half of her life and works with animals the other half.
Many friends of hers, have commented about her wonderful relationship with animals. Betty’s friend, Tom Sullivan says that, Betty has a better relationship with animals than she has with people and that she can even charm the savage beast. Another gentleman has said, ‘ she will be remembered as one of the greatest actresses & comedians of all time, but I think she’ll be delighted if people remember her as s person who dedicated her whole life to the well-being of animals.
All this information and the opinions of her peers depict the love Betty had towards animals and how much she loved the time she spent with them. Betty once sat next to a giant brown bear at the Los angles zoo, fed the bear marshmallows with her own hands. Afterward kept speaking to the creature with no fear at any instance. The bear was calm at its best. Then betty kissed the furry giant telling, “I’m the luckiest old broad on two feet”. This is unbelievable love towards animals.
