A unique sight was seen by hikers traversing a gorge in Lake Powell between Arizona and Utah. An owl swimming.
Owls are not often renowned for swimming in the water, the hikers were shocked to say the least when they spotted the bird doing just that.
As proven by National Geographic, owls rarely choose to swim when they do get the chance. Aside from the fact that their feathers are not waterproof, they are helpless once submerged and cannot even leave the water. Instead, they must locate some open space where they can dry their feathers before taking to the air once more. This implies that the little creature was probably in a life-or-death situation when the hikers came across it.
The swimming bird in the video is most likely a young great horned owl that has just started to travel the world, according to Geoff LeBaron from the National Audubon Society, who spoke with National Geographic. LeBaron remarked, “I think it truly dropped out of the nest. “Great horned [owls] do nest on ledges on cliffs,”
LeBaron continued, “This bird is young enough that its parents were probably still taking care of it. Hopefully when people passed by, the youngster dried off and its parents located it.
