Of all the shades of color traced in a person’s eyes, those tending toward an intense shade of green are among the rarest in the world and, it is said, even the most attractive of all.
Here are some curious and interesting facts about green eyes and the people who are lucky enough to have them!
The color of the eyes depends on two main factors: the type and quantity of pigments present on the iris and the amount of light that reaches this curious and beautiful organ. Although this is a fact, the genetic explanation behind the determination of color is not yet obvious. It is known that it is a polygenic trait (and therefore complex) and that the genes involved in this process known so far are three: EYCL1, EYCL2, and EYCL3.
All this leads us to clarify that green eyes, per se, do not exist, but they appear so in people with a little more melanin and carotenoids on the iris than those with light blue or blue eyes (but a lot less than those with dark eyes).
The curious thing is that only 2% of the world’s population is thought to have this genetic trait ( most women ), ranking fifth in terms of rarity after shades of amber, violet, deep black, and red.
Green eyes are native and most present in the European continent (especially Northern and Central Europe), but there are populations with this trait in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
