Stella and Severide Take First Steps Toward Parenthood in Chicago Fire Season 13 Sneak Peek

The One Chicago universe is vast, and has, over the years, thrown up lovely romances for audiences to sink their teeth into. While Chicago P.D. offers up the Burzek romance, its counterpart, Chicago Fire, brings the romance of Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and her husband, Kelly Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) to the fore. The pair have handled several challenges to their relationship, navigating tricky waters and are now at a crossroads. They desire an expansion to their family, and it is coming in Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 20. “With the crew stretched thin, a performance efficiency expert evaluates Firehouse 51; Kidd and Severide bond with the mother of the baby they hope to adopt,” the official logline for the show’s next episode reads.

Besides providing a synopsis for an episode which is set to air on May 7 on NBC, the network has also released a sneak peek teasing what lies ahead. “There is a woman in Med, she’s going into labor…” Kidd begins, “And we are adopting the baby,” Severide finishes after her. The couple head over to Med where they meet the woman in labor, but soon after there seem to be complications. To deliver the baby, the surgeons at the hospital will have to perform an emergency C-section on the mother. While Stella and Severide might not be directly involved, the couple are not spared from the tension and pressure of the occasion.

Stella and Severide Are Having a Baby

Stella and Severide had agreed that to have a child, Stella would not get pregnant, as she wasn’t interested in that. Adoption was the next cause of action. The sneak peek is a confirmation of showrunner Andrea Newman‘s promise that the show would deal with the question of a child for the couple soon. “[The couple is] on quite the journey this season trying to start their family… In an upcoming episode, they’ll finally get the call they’ve been waiting for. What happens then, viewers have to tune in to find out!,” Newman said recently.

It is exciting to note that Stella and Severide deciding to expand their family is an exciting decision. The route the show has chosen to fulfill that is one well trodden. Adoption is welcome news, but Chicago Fire and the One Chicago universe at large, have visited this particular storyline before. Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) have a similar story from a previous season with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Joe Cruz (Joe Miñoso) have also explored similar routes to expanding their respective families. The recurrent nature of one particular storyline might render it unappealing, suggesting that perhaps, Stella might have provided a fresher, exciting storyline to get behind.
