This heartwarming prom story goes viral again and everyone understands why

Sometimes, regular people do amazing things that restore our faith in humanity. Share this touching Facebook post from a few years back. I get emotional every time I read it. It’s about a dad remembering the day a girl came to his workplace to ask about his autistic child.

The wishes of children with special needs are often the same as those of other children their age. A 17-year-old would want to find a date for the school dance, so it can be tough on their self-esteem if nobody agrees to go with them.

Being by oneself can lead to social isolation for a teenager, which can negatively impact their self-esteem, even though it may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Kids with certain issues, like autism, might be extra sensitive and struggle to understand everything fully. In this story, Mike Larson decided to document his autistic son Jon preparing for prom. He shared the story on Facebook, where it has been widely shared and appreciated. Check it out

Mike wrote, “This is my son Jon with his prom date Maddi,” on his prom photo post. He mentioned that Jon is a junior and has autism. Maddi, a senior, approached Mike at his office (as he is a teacher at their school) about taking Jon to prom about a month ago.

Mike added, “Maddi got to know Jon through a school club that encourages friendships between special needs kids and regular kids. She mentioned that he’s a junior, so it’s his prom as well. I believe he deserves the opportunity to attend.” I assured her that we would be delighted to have him accompany her.

Maddi chose Jon as her prom date and wanted to make it an unforgettable night for him. She found out that Jon’s favorite color was orange, so she bought a dress in that color. She also booked a table at a restaurant that served his favorite food – chicken fingers, French fries, and chocolate milk. They went with another couple to make it even more enjoyable.

Maddi wished to check with his dad if it was okay to invite Jon to the dance.

Mike Larson expressed that it was an incredibly awe-inspiring moment for him when speaking to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Mike mentioned that he had three explanations for posting the prom photo on social media.

1. “to show support for special kids like Jon.”

2. “to show support for groups that promote these friendships.”

3. “to remind us all, in a time when we hear about all the terrible things going on, that there are wonderful kids like Maddi working to make other’s lives better.

The prom photo that went viral was initially shared in 2013. Mike Larson later gave updates on what happened to the couple after prom.

In 2019, he rejoiced as the post garnered 1 million shares and his words spread across the globe. He also provided an update on Jon’s well-being, stating, “Many have inquired about Jon’s condition. He is thriving and content, residing in his own home.”

Mike shared that Maddi is now married and sometimes feels “embarrassed” by the attention, not seeing it as something special. Mike ended the post by thanking everyone who wished them well.

Jon’s father had various thoughts when Jon was diagnosed with autism over 16 years ago. He thought Jon might never go to prom. However, Maddi made sure Jon not only went to prom but also had an amazing time!

Mike Larson expressed his surprise and gratitude for the wonderful way something unexpected happened for his family, and how it ended up blessing the lives of others. He believes it will be a cherished memory for them.

Today, my child has reached the age of 20. Jon, I have a great affection for you. On January 19, 2015, Mike Larson shared a blog post.

I truly admire the presence of kind and caring individuals in the world – it brings hope to everyone. If you also enjoy this story, please follow the father’s request and share it with your loved ones as well!

This young lady is so sweet & considerate for asking his parents first I hope they had many photos taken of them to remember that special event!
