Grappling with his son’s suicide, Michael Madsen still hopes to find answers

“I love you dad,” was the last text Michael Madsen received from his son, Hudson, before the 26-year-old Army sergeant took his own life in January 2022. Hudson, the godson of Quentin Tarantino, had recently completed a tour in Afghanistan and was stationed in Hawaii.

Michael Madsen told the LA Times he was shocked by the tragedy, saying, “He said he was happy… I didn’t see any signs of depression.” Hudson was married to Carlie since 2019, and despite facing fertility challenges and Carlie’s recent surgery to remove a tumor, the couple appeared happy.

Hudson had shown signs of mental health struggles, but reportedly stopped seeking help due to concerns about stigma in the military. Madsen has requested an investigation into the circumstances around his son’s death.

After Hudson’s passing, Carlie posted tributes online, expressing deep grief: “I just wish you would have talked to me… I’m sorry I didn’t see the signs.”

The family said in a statement: “We are heartbroken and overwhelmed with grief and pain at the loss of Hudson.”
